When making a move, many people consider the school district in which their home will be located. Whether they have children or not, they realize that a desirable school district can increase their home’s overall value. For all of us in Northern Virginia, we are lucky to have some of the best public schools in the US right in our backyards. Fairfax County especially has long been recognized as one of the top public school systems in the country.
Recently, a study was done by the Washington Post to find the “most challenging” high schools in the country, and all of the Fairfax County High Schools made the list. The Post took it even further, and compared all the high schools in the DC metro area against each other. Of the top 50 high schools in DC, eastern Maryland, and Northern Virginia, 25 were in Northern Virginia and 16 were Fairfax County High Schools.

- How do I verify that my child will attend a certain school in Fairfax County?
- What is the best way to search for a home in my desired school district?
We will help you clarify these things and get you and your family in the right place.
How do I verify that my child will attend a certain school in Fairfax County?
This is the most cut-and-dry answer, IF you are already in a home in Fairfax County or you know a specific address you are interested in. Fairfax County Public Schools has its own boundary locator, which you can reach by clicking here. Simply enter the house number and street name, and the site will give you the elementary, middle, and high school that serves the address. In Fairfax County, you will also see the nearest Advanced Academic Placement Centers, which may or may not be the school you are assigned to already. For more information on these programs, you can visit the Fairfax County Public School’s site, here.
What is the best way to search for a home in my desired school district?
Fairfax County has about 200 schools between elementary, middle, secondary, high, and special education centers. It is one of the largest districts in the country, and many of the schools have special programs that appeal to all kinds of student interests and skills. This article will not help you select the school that is right for your family, but once you know where you want to be, this is what you can do.
Many people will search on sites like Zillow or Trulia, which include nearby schools on each home’s page. This can be a way to start, but it is essential to understand that these sites have not verified their school information. They are simply displaying the schools that are the closest to the home, which may or may not be correct. If this is the method you are using, be sure to cross-reference with Fairfax County’s boundary locator.
The best way to search for a home zoned for your favorite school is to work with an experienced Realtor. Although by our code of ethics we cannot recommend a school to you and your family, we can certainly help you find a home that rests within the desired school district that you have identified. A great Realtor will know how to search for homes in the MLS that fit any criteria you have, including schools.
Goss Realty Group will do that for you, as well as set you up on a listing alert of available homes in your desired school district.
